Are you passionate about designing and implementing cutting-edge cloud solutions? We are seeking a skilled Cloud Engineer to join our dynamic team. You will play a crucial role in maintaining our cloud infrastructure to meet the demands of the council’s rapidly evolving technology.

We’re mature in our cloud adoption, and are now embarking on an exciting new phase to optimise and automate, while ensuring we’re adhering to relevant cloud security governance frameworks.

About the team

Our team formed back in 2020, bringing together people from a range of diverse backgrounds including applications management, networking, service support and engineering. We value open communication, regular feedback, creative thinking, learning by doing and knowledge sharing.

We have developed a culture of exploration and collaboration. We welcome and embrace curious minds. We have a really engaging community of practice which links up with other disciplines within our service including software engineering, data engineering, security and delivery.

About the role

As a mid level engineer working in the Cloud Platform team, you will:

  • Develop, maintain and optimise the platform. Including introducing new services, improving existing ones, and implementing best practice to ensure the security, performance and sustainability of cloud applications and services
  • Have a FinOps mindset and always consider the cost implications in everything that you do
  • Work within development standards and best practice, as agreed by the rest of the team, and help to drive those forward
  • Work collaboratively with others outside your team including software engineers, data engineers and cyber security specialists
  • Actively contribute to the work of the team, so that all its members benefit from your skills and experience; promote the generous sharing of expertise and create opportunities for continuous learning and development.

While you are not expected to know everything about all of technologies we use, you should have experience in some of the following:

  • AWS services and well architected best practices
  • Designing, implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Github actions, CircleCI, Jenkins etc)
  • IaC such as Terraform and Cloud Formation
  • Cloud security best practices
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting cloud infrastructure
  • Containerization technologies (Docker, ECS)
  • Networking fundamentals
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting network issues
  • Automating processes to remove manual activities
  • Scripting languages such as Python, Bash and Powershell
  • Code, test, document, and lead reviews of complex programs/scripts.

About you

We don’t expect you to tick every box on our job description. The most important things we are looking for are:

  • A curious mind with good problem solving skills
  • Enthusiasm for learning, having an eye on continuous improvement
  • Not being afraid to ask questions, make mistakes and learn from them
  • Proactive team member, willing to share successes and failures with the team
  • A self starter who can work autonomously, as well as collaboratively.
  • Experience developing in an Agile environment.

Our priorities

Over the next year our priority areas of focus are:

  • Improving the security of our cloud platform
  • Providing greater visibility across the platform of errors, threats and costs
  • Upskilling the team to a baseline certification level in the technologies that we use.
