We are looking for an enthusiastic Team Leader to join our small team delivering Governance Services at the London Borough of Hackney.

If you are the kind of person who approaches everything they do with energy and purpose, who is conscientious in their work and has a passion for democracy and governance then we are looking for you. The Governance Services team sits at the very heart of Hackney Council. It is the team responsible for managing the Council’s decision-making processes

The successful candidate will work across all aspects of the democratic process at Hackney, with specific responsibility for the management of the Governance team and to be the strategic lead for Governance services, to lead the team in the development of good governance across the Council.

The Team Leader will have oversight of the management of the municipal calendar of meetings (preparation of agendas, reports and minutes), providing sound advice and guidance to councillors and officers on constitutional matters and the ethical framework applying to councillors.

The team is looking to develop and improve support to the Council to ensure the efficient management of the decision-making processes in accordance with statutory and best practice requirements.

You will be a confident and motivated person who is capable of balancing many priorities, able to communicate to a high standard, both verbally and in writing, and who has excellent organisational and IT skills.

Benefits include a minimum of 24 days’ annual leave, a pension scheme, and flexible working hours.

Please note this is a politically restricted post.

Attendance at evening meetings will be required.

If you would like an informal discussion about the post, please contact Tess Merrett, Governance Services Manager via tess.merrett@hackney.gov.uk or Dawn Carter-McDonald, Head of Legal and Governance via dawn.carter-mcdonald@hackney.gov.uk

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

When applying, it is essential that you include a supporting statement (no more than two sides of A4), addressing how your skills, knowledge and experience meet all aspects of the post, as indicated in the job description and person specification.

Closing date for applications: 08 March 2020

Interviews: w/c 23 March 2020

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.

Hackney Council works to eradicate discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy and maternity, age and marital status. We also recognise that people can be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will also work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class. We also welcome those interested in flexible working. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people, as this group is currently under represented in our workforce.
