Hackney is looking for a Lead Front End Developer to specialise in our products to support vulnerable residents. You will help set the standards for how we do front-end development. You’ll be the product owner for our design system and facilitate our community of practice. You’ll get to work with a range of digital agencies that help augment our capacity and support us to develop the tools where commercial software isn’t fit for purpose. 

Everything we do starts with residents and meeting their needs. Our front-end development needs to meet best practice for accessibility, so that we design solutions that work for everyone. They need to be lightweight, simple and intuitive to use. We imagine a user accessing a service on a cracked iPhone 5 whilst on a bus, with pay-as-you-go data. 

As part of the recovery from the cyberattack, Hackney is developing enterprise-level design patterns to support staff in supporting our 28,000 tenants and the 500 or so staff responsible for protecting our vulnerable childrens, families and older people. 

Our work is rooted in the GOV.UK design system but meets a wider range of needs. We have the flexibility to think beyond ‘digital by default’ to consider how we use technology and data to support empathic services for people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives. 

As a team, Hackney IT is currently transitioning from ‘start-up’ to scale-up, ensuring we have the right patterns, processes and automated tooling so that we can release features fortnightly and optimise them to meet user needs. You’ll be confident working natively in AWS, using GitHub and CI/CD pipelines for deployment and tools like Selenium for testing.
