24 Months Fixed Term Contract / Secondment Opportunity

We know that staff are key to our success and we are seeking people with ambition, creativity and commitment to our values to help us achieve the best for the people of Hackney.

Our Public Realm Division ensures that the London Borough of Hackney is clean, safe and accessible for all our residents, businesses and visitors. Our Sustainability and Environmental team is responsible for our council waste strategy including recycling and local environmental quality to ensure we protect the local environment. This is a really exciting time to join our team, during a busy period, as we settle into one of the biggest service changes to our waste collections and continue to drive up our recycling rates.

We are looking for a Recycling Assistant to support the Recycling Officer and wider team to implement the Council’s Waste and Recycling Strategy and support the development and delivery of key recycling and waste prevention initiatives. The role will provide the individual the opportunity to use their initiative to develop project ideas and solutions to increase recycling. The Recycling Assistant will be a key point of contact for our resident’s queries and will be required to investigate and resolve enquiries and issues that arise. The Recycling Assistant will also monitor the residential recycling service, public street banks and carry out inspections to support the delivery of our new waste collection service. The successful candidate will attend events to engage with our residents and support the delivery of a range of projects and campaigns.

Your experience, knowledge and commitment to waste and recycling are what we are looking for to join our busy team. We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about the environment and holds a strong desire to work within the waste and recycling sector. Your administration experience and communication skills coupled with your dedication to customer service will enable you to offer the best solutions to our residents. The successful candidate will be required to carry out on-site work monitoring the recycling services, involving some spells of independent working. An ability and willingness to work flexible hours, which may require some early mornings, weekends and evenings is essential.

Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. We have achieved a huge amount: our services, our schools, our public spaces are all amongst the very best. We have changed the reputation, not just of the Council, but of Hackney itself. Bringing jobs and investment into the borough, securing the legacy from the 2012 Games, and making this a place of which we can all be proud.

If you want to work in a place where you can represent our values so we achieve the best for our residents, please click on the apply button below.

The recruitment process is anonymous. Therefore, we do not accept supporting statements or CVs.

When applying, there will be a number of questions relating to the post on the application form. It is essential that you complete the application questions, responding to each using examples of your skills, knowledge and experience.

Interview date: 11 November 2021

We are also working towards our vision, which is to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud; a place that celebrates diversity and where everyone can feel valued, included and involved. In order to achieve this, we look for people who are: Proud; Ambitious; Pioneering; Open; Proactive; Inclusive.
