Introduction to the role

We have partnered with the London Office of Technology (LOTI) and social enterprise Founders and Coders, based in Finsbury Park, to create a number of Software Engineering apprenticeships at Hackney Council.

Apprentices work as part of multi-disciplinary, agile teams to build digital products used by our staff and residents to access Council services.

During your apprenticeship you will get to work collaboratively with more senior colleagues to solve complex problems with digital solutions.

You will learn about new technologies and gain experience working with:

  • C# (.NET)
  • JavaScript (React)
  • Databases including SQL Server, Posgres, MySQL, DynamoDb
  • Cloud technologies, specifically Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
  • Git/Github.


Introduction to the service

Our team is part of ICT & Workplace Services and has two disciplines: software and cloud engineering. Software engineers’ work ranges from customising off the shelf systems to building cloud native products.

We’ve been part of cutting edge digital transformation work, building applications and services using some of the latest cloud technologies that are more responsive and deliver better user experiences.

We offer hybrid working. You will be expected to come into our offices in the Hackney Service Centre to work with your team for a minimum of two days a month, however many of us come in more frequently. Like many organisations, our hybrid arrangements are evolving and you may be expected to work from the office more frequently in future.

Skills and Experience

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about coding. While we do not expect you to have any software qualifications or experience, it would be beneficial to see evidence of your interest in this field. This could be in the form of a code repository showcasing work you have done or a website/ web application that you have built.

Eligibility for this apprenticeship:

For this position, you will either:**

Already hold at least a Level 2 or GCSE A*-C / 4-9 in Maths and English


Be willing to complete this during your apprenticeship training.

**If you hold an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), a statement of special educational needs (SEN) or a learning difficulty assessment (LDA) this criteria may not apply and you will be assessed individually

You will not be eligible for the apprenticeship if you already hold an equivalent level Business Administrator qualification.

You must also meet at least one of the additional set criteria for eligibility for our apprenticeship positions:

– You are a current resident of the London Borough of Hackney

– You are a current student at a Hackney education institution (school, college, university, PRU/alternative provision, Adult Learning provision)

– You are a former student at a Hackney secondary education institution and completed at least one GCSE or equivalent Level 2 qualification there

– You are a current or former recipient of Hackney leaving care services.

To access Apprenticeship training funding you must also:

– Hold a British/EEA passport or have permission from the UK government to live in the UK AND

– Have been resident in the UK or EEA for at least the last three years. If you are a resident of the EEA, you must have settled or confirmed settled status in the UK.
