Our Public Realm Division ensures that the London Borough of Hackney is clean, safe and accessible for all our residents, businesses and visitors. Our Streetscene team is responsible for the design and maintenance of all highway networks, footways, bridges and lighting on all public roads, contributing to the well-being of our community and creating a sustainable public realm. The Sustainable Transport and Engagement team deliver smarter travel and road safety programmes to influence behaviour change towards safer and more sustainable forms of travel. Our work includes building on a previous European Union funded project called STARS, which brings together best practice from 9 partner cities to develop a pan-Europe framework for achieving an increase in cycling to school through School Travel Plan accreditation and peer to peer education and promotion.
We are looking for a Transport Planner to join the Sustainable Transport and Engagement team. You will join an industry leading team with a track record of delivering innovative, and award winning, sustainable transport projects and will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, while also fulfilling core functions such as monitoring travel plans. Working alongside our Senior and Principal Transport Planners you will engage with staff and students at local schools, through the delivery of presentations, facilitation of workshops and project managing campaigns to ensure a measurable shift towards walking and cycling across the Borough. You will also contribute to projects and campaigns aimed at local employers to influence local journeys to work.
Your youth engagement skills gained within an education or learning environment; along with your experience with your knowledge of transport planning and behaviour change campaigns are what we are looking for. The successful candidate will have good and effective communication and interpersonal skills and be proactive in adding value to the service delivered, in initiating, developing and implementing Best Value and providing customer-focused standards in regulatory environment.
You will have project management experience and leadership ability along with proficient IT skills. It would be beneficial for you to have a qualification and membership of, or eligibility for membership of, a relevant professional body in one of the following fields: Transportation Planning, Road Safety Education, Teaching, or Youth Engagement.
With excellent report writing skills required for the preparation of reports and consultation documentation and good understanding of environmental and sustainability policy and legislation the ideal candidate will also have the ability to:
* Communicate effectively with service users e.g. negotiations, presenting evidence or advice in a public forum within Hackney’s diverse community
* Liaise with other internal directorates and external agencies to communicate project objectives and/or source information required.
* Understand plans and drawings and other relevant technical information related to Sustainable Transport projects.
* Be willing to attend meetings or undertake work outside normal working hours e.g. evening meetings
