Hackney Council is looking for people to join our team of Environmental Operatives and Estate Cleaners. Your work will help us create a cleaner, safer, greener Hackney. This is an important way of delivering our commitment to making this borough a place for everyone.

As an Environmental Operative / Estate Cleaner, you will be based at our Millfields Road depot. We have two teams working from there: Environmental Operations and Hygiene Services. Our waste teams focus on cleaning streets, estates; winter gritting; refuse and recycling collections, gully cleaning, graffiti and fly-poster removal. While our hygiene teams’ deal with pest control, stray dogs and maintaining public toilets. We employ over 500 staff and use over 100 vehicles to deliver these services which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You will be working on any of the activities run from the depot. You will be supported by a team of drivers and will have any training needed to help you carry out your work effectively. We need people who appreciate the importance of health and safety and have an excellent approach to customer service. You will need to be able to follow instructions, give out accurate information and be committed to learning new skills such as digital working.

You should be someone who takes pride in your work, who is keen to achieve high standards. To thrive in this role you should be able to undertake physical work in open air, sometimes in poor weather conditions. You must enjoy working as part of a team but also be able to motivate yourself when working alone.

Any agency staff currently working in these roles who are successful in their application will start at a scale no lower than their current rate.
