Hackney Council has an exciting opportunity for you to become an apprentice within the Building Maintenance Service. The service has a large workforce providing repairs and maintenance to Hackney residents and properties. The Building Maintenance team has a well-established apprenticeship programme which will enable you to gain experience, a qualification in your chosen trade and earn while you learn.

You will work alongside qualified operatives to gain on the job skills and attend college either one day per week or on block release to obtain the skills and knowledge required to achieve your qualification. You will also have access to our apprenticeship development, networking & progression workshops run regularly.

We are looking for practically minded candidates who have passion and enthusiasm, are reliable, have good organisational skills and the desire to deliver a high quality service for Hackney residents and users. We have Apprenticeship opportunities in the following trade; Plumbing, Painting and Decorating, Electrical, Domestic Gas Engineering and Multi-Trade.

Programme Eligibility

Apprenticeships have specific eligibility criteria which you MUST be able to provide evidence for. This includes a link to Hackney and specific educational eligibility. It is important that you read the Job Descriptions and Person Specifications fully.

You will not be eligible if you cannot provide this evidence.

Apprentice Carpenter x2

Carpentry & Joinery – Level 2

The Carpentry Apprentice will learn the skills required to become a qualified Carpenter.  During the apprenticeship you will learn how to install, repair and maintain doors, windows, locks and other associated works in Hackney’s residentials and void properties and public buildings. Upon completion of Level 2 you will continue onto Level 3.

Apprentice Electrician

Installation and maintenance electrician – Level 3

The Electrical Apprentice will learn the skills required to install, repair and maintain electrical services.  As an apprentice you will learn the skills required to  install wiring, lighting, power circuits, test for faults and repair defects etc. You will be helping to maintain the upkeep of Hackney properties. 

Apprentice Domestic Gas Engineer x2

Gas Engineering Operative  Level 3

The Commercial Gas Apprentice will gain the skills and knowledge to work on commercial gas services to provide heating and hot water to properties in the borough. You will learn how to install boilers, radiators and pipework and assist with the servicing, repairs and maintenance of gas appliances. The apprentice will also learn how to install and maintain air source heat pumps.

Plumbing Apprentice

Plumbing & domestic heating technician Level 3

The Plumbing Apprentice will learn the skills required to work on the water services to properties. Your work will involve installing and unblocking sinks and toilets, repairing leaks and installing pipework etc. You will be assisting in providing an effective plumbing repairs and maintenance service to the Council’s residents in their properties and public buildings in Hackney.

ALL successful applicants must be available to start this apprenticeship by 1st September 2026.

The application form will contain questions which you must answer. It is essential that you complete the application questions, responding to each using examples of your skills, knowledge and experience and relate them to the Job Description. Please take your time and answer these questions as fully as you can. This may make the difference between getting an interview or not.

Assessment Session:

All eligible Level 3 applicants will be invited to attend a Maths and English Initial Assessment.

You must be able to attend this session, to progress to the next stage.
