Help shape the future of Hackney’s markets where enterprise, culture and community thrive.
Hackney’s markets are more than places to shop; they’re incubators for creativity, small-business growth and community pride. From Ridley Road to Broadway Market, thousands of residents, visitors and entrepreneurs come together every week to trade, create and connect.
Behind this vibrant network is a dedicated team making it all work. We’re now looking for a Licensing & Digital Media Officer, a unique role that combines precision with creativity, compliance with storytelling, and data management with people engagement.
Hackney’s markets are thriving but none of it happens by accident. Behind every stall, every trader, and every successful event is a backbone of brilliant administration, licensing precision, and digital creativity.
This is your chance to play a vital behind-the-scenes and frontline role in one of the country’s most ambitious, inclusive, and award-winning local economy services.
THE ROLE
As a Licensing & Digital Media Officer, you’ll sit at the very heart of the Markets, Shop Fronts & Street Trading Service, ensuring our statutory duties are delivered seamlessly while helping traders tell their stories and grow their businesses.
you’ll play a hands-on role in keeping the wheels turning, supporting thousands of small and micro-businesses across Hackney’s markets, shop fronts, street trading and incubation hubs while telling their stories to the world.
You’ll balance the structure of licensing compliance with the creativity of digital storytelling: one day processing a street trading licence or reconciling income, the next capturing the buzz of Broadway Market for social media or helping a new trader promote their launch.
On any given day, you might:
– Process and issue street trading and market licences, ensuring every transaction is accurate, compliant and transparent.
– Advise local traders and start-ups on how to join Hackney’s thriving market scene.
– Reconcile daily income and manage licensing records that underpin one of the UK’s most successful local market systems.
– Capture and share the life of Hackney’s markets through creative digital campaigns from trader spotlights and event highlights to inclusive community features.
– Mentor traders to build their digital marketing confidence and help their small businesses reach new audiences.
– Work alongside the Strategy, Policy & Digital Development Manager on data-led campaigns that strengthen our local economy and celebrate Hackney’s diverse voices.
This is a hands-on, people-focused role where you’ll see the direct impact of your work every week from a new trader opening their first stall to the buzz of a packed market day.
ABOUT YOU
You’ll be a natural communicator , organised, curious, digitally confident and passionate about helping others succeed. You’ll have an eye for detail and accuracy when handling licensing and payments, paired with the creativity to produce engaging social content that reflects Hackney’s spirit and diversity.
Experience in administration, communications, or public-facing environments will help, but above all we’re looking for someone who believes in inclusive growth, great customer service and the power of local enterprise.
You’ll also be flexible and happy to work weekends, when Hackney’s markets truly come alive.
Why Join Us?
Our Markets, Shop Fronts & Street Trading Service is:
– Be part of a multi-award-winning service that’s driving inclusive economic growth across London.
– Support over 2000 businesses and 10 markets, including the UK’s first Zero Plastic Markets.
– A multi-award-winning team with accolades from LGC, APSE, NABMA and more
– A driver of inclusive growth, sustainability and cultural celebration.
– Home to Iconic cultural assets such as Ridley Road, Broadway and Hoxton Markets.
– A place where staff thrive, innovate and shape the future of public service delivery.
